Frizzy hair? This is How to Tame Unruly Locks

By Charlotte de Vries

No matter how many times you’ve been told frizzy hair is completely normal (because it is), sometimes all you want is to be told how to take frizz from foe to friend. If you think about it, you already have more in common with frizz than you think. Frizz is a way of signalling that your hair needs more care and attention. It wants the best for your hair, just like you do. Now we know it’s no longer the enemy, let’s talk frizzy hair treatments.

What Causes Frizz?

Before we dive into frizzy hair treatments, it’s helpful to understand what causes frizz in the first place. Frizz occurs when your hair is dry and lacks moisture. *womp womp*. This can happen for various reasons, including:

  • Humidity: Humid conditions cause dry, thirsty hair cuticles to open and absorb moisture, leading to frizz.
  • Damage: Over-styling, heat, and chemical treatments can weaken the hair, meaning hair cuticles have a hard time lying flat.
  • Hair Type: Naturally curly or wavy hair is more susceptible to frizz due to its structure, which makes it harder for natural oils to travel down the hair shaft.

Once you understand why frizzy hair happens, you can find a long-term solution. No quick fixes round ‘ere! Ready to put the fun in frizz?

How to Tame Frizzy Hair

Hydration is Key

The most effective way to fight off frizz is to keep your hair full of moisture. When your hair is happily hydrated, the cuticles remain flat as it isn’t parched, reducing the chances of frizz. Here are some of our favourite ways to maintain moisture and prevent a frizz frenzy:

  • Deep Conditioning Treatments: Incorporate a deep conditioning treatment into your hair care routine once a week. Look for products rich in natural oils like coconut, argan, and shea butter, as they provide intense moisture. Our Curl Conditioner, enriched with nourishing ingredients, is a great option.
  • Leave-in Conditioners: These are ideal for locking in moisture throughout the day as they remain in the hair, delivering constant hydration. To use, apply a small amount to damp hair, focusing on the ends, which are often the driest.
  • Hydrating Hair Masks: A weekly hair mask can make all the difference when treating frizzy hair. Opt for masks with hydrating ingredients such as honey, avocado, and aloe vera.

Treat Your Hair with Care

Frizzy hair is often fragile as the hair cuticles are raised, so it’s essential to be more careful when handling it. But you don’t need to fear frizz, just a few changes and you can strengthen your bond (and hair).

  • Use a Wide-Tooth Comb: Opt for a wide-tooth comb, such as an Afro Pick, instead of a brush when detangling your hair. This reduces breakage and helps maintain your hair’s natural texture.
  • Avoid Heat Styling: Heat can strip your hair of moisture, leading to more frizz. If you need heat, apply a heat protectant first and keep the temperature on the lower side.
  • Pat, Don’t Rub: After washing your hair, gently pat it dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing it. Rubbing causes a lot of friction, and as a result, frizz.

Embrace the Right Products: Tailor Your Hair Care

Our last treatment advice for frizzy hair is to choose hair care products specially formulated for your hair type, AKA frizzy. You wouldn’t use hair care products for straight hair on your curls, right?

  • Sulfate-Free Shampoos: Sulfates can strip your hair of natural oils, which leads to dryness and frizz. A sulfate-free shampoo is much gentler and helps retain moisture.
  • Anti-Frizz Serums: These are designed to smooth the hair cuticle and reduce frizz. Apply a small amount to damp or dry hair, depending on the instructions, focusing on the areas prone to frizz.
  • Natural Oils: A few drops of natural oil, such as argan or jojoba, can add shine and control frizz. Always apply oils sparingly to avoid weighing down your hair and losing volume.

But remember, frizzy hair doesn’t need to be ‘fixed’. If you like your hair with a little more personality, that’s cool. However, if you’d prefer defined, frizz-free curls, that’s also A-OK. Following these simple, yet effective tips will help you to achieve exactly that. Farewell, frizz!
